Reading Log Template

A reading log is the sheet that goes home in the folder on Monday and comes back on Friday with the week's books on it, and it is filled in by a child, checked by a parent and read by a teacher, so the rows have to be big and the columns have to be few. Most printable logs are a spreadsheet with a cartoon owl. This one is twenty-two ruled rows with room for a pencil, the columns a log actually needs, and a name at the top.

The columns are the date, the book and its author, the pages read, the minutes, and a box for an initial, a parent's or a teacher's. The last three are switches: a class that counts minutes turns pages off, a home log turns initials off, and the book column widens to take the room. A line at the top holds the month or the term, in any words, or prints blank.

One decision worth explaining: the rows are ruled, not boxed. A row with a line under it is easier to write on than a cell, especially for a hand that is still learning, and twenty-two of them fill the sheet without crowding. Four weeks of one book a night is twenty-eight, so a month is one sheet and a bit.

Six color themes, with the sage as the default because it is easy on the eye in a stack of them, and light ink for the class set printed thirty at a time. The title is yours, Reading log or Books this term or the class's name.
